PRINCETON TRIES TO SILENCE PRO-ISRAEL ANTI-TERROR MEETING

HILLEL PRINCETON SITS BY "SILENTLY"

Some of the Jewish Student "misleaders" at Princeton, ever intolerant of Jewish activism attempted to block the originally planned anti-terror meeting that was originally scheduled to take place right at Princeton University itself. Tragically, the head honchos at Princeton University fearful of allowing this truly pro-Israel, anti-terror meeting to take place intimidated several of the Jewish students active in a local Jewish club affiliated with the ever timid Hillel campus organization. After the top people that run Princeton leaned on these cowardly Jewish student " misleaders" they collapsed like a house of cards. At this point Zvi Smith, and fellow Hillel lemming Debra Arotsky tried canceling the event.

JDO was quick to blast this hypocrisy when in fact it is Princeton that bastion of tolerance for anti-Israel terror that is hiring Rashid Khalidi, long time PLO terrorist to teach.

This and other Israel hating activities that the heads frauds of Princeton do, while the cowardly leaders of Hillel there, and its affiliated groups sit and do nothing about.

When JDO Director Mordechai Levy found out about the attempt to silence this pro- Israel event by the like of Jewish students like Zev Smith and Debra Arotsky, and co who bent over backwards to appease the university administration he blasted them.

JDO even was told that one pathetic "shiver in his boots" Hillel connected person, Smith even called campus security on one particular Jewish activist that was daring to walk into Hillel and hang out trying to convince Jewish students to attend the upcoming serious pro-Israel lecture. It was this meeting that Jewish activists had to move off campus because of the cowardice and apathy of certain Jews with names like Smith & Arotsky.

If anything Hillel and all Jewish students should have mobilized huge demonstrations demanding PLO terrorist, enemy of Jews, Israel & America, Rashid Khalidi be fired now." The greatest proof that Jewish students are being led to anti-Semitic disaster is what happened at Princeton.

What is going on there is exactly the same anti-Jewish anti-Israel threats that went on at Columbia. Just as the campus Rabbi at Columbia Rabbi Sheer sat on his hands through huge number of attacks on Jews, and Israel, Princeton Hillel leaders are sitting on their hands the same cowardly way." In fact JDO also condemned the refusal to stand up by the local Hillel director, named Roth, who has never organized one demonstration against Khalidi the PLO terror leader now on campus.

JDO is demanding that Jewish students hold street demonstrations to drive Rashid Khalidi right out, with the rest of the PLO "bomb Jews battalion." JDO also demands that all alumni cut off all money to Princeton, as the sleazy administrators that allow this have no real conscience. In fact their only conscience is in their wallet, and that is where we have to hit them. JDO intends to contact the alumni to cut off every dime until PLO terrorist Khalidi is fired.

JDO was quick to add we have some big plans to run these Jew-Haters, Israel-Haters and America-Haters like Arab terrorist Khalidi right out of Princeton as part of OPERATION CRUSH TERROR!

DUKE UNIVERSITY IS PLANNING TO HOLD A RALLY THAT WILL INCLUDE TERRORIST PLO THUGS. PLEASE CALL THE PRESIDENT OF DUKE UNIVERSITY AND ASK HIM TO CANCEL THIS RALLY, RICHARD BRODHEAD 919-684-2424 or email richard.brodhead@duke.edu

Read the article below and weep! It smacks of the same cowardice of our American Jewish Establishment that refused to rally and march while 6 million Jews were "done to death" during the Holocaust. At the time the assorted Jewish appeasers men and women made up their appeasement-laden minds to sit on their hands and do nothing!

Now that JDO and others promise demonstrations the Jewish Uncle Jakes (our version of Uncle Tom's) grovel in front of Brodhead the President at Duke who won't even cancel or even condemn the Arab terrorist meeting ob his campus.

Read the words of the pathetic below, and remember that when JDO Jew-Hating pogromists rioting against Jews in the Crown Heights Pogrom the Jewish Establishment from New York to Raleigh were invisible, except for condemning JDO .

When JDO several years ago fought another Jew-Hater named Duke, in Louisiana David Duke that is the Jewish Establishment condemned JDO for planned demonstrations against Nazi Duke. In the end after Nazi KKK Duke won the election even they saw the light and put together their own rallies.

Now, as Jews are being murdered worldwide what do the Zaleons and Szulik's local buffoons from the Greensboro Federation have to say for themselves? That Jews should not protest a real live "death to Israel” conference? Are these 2 in their right mind? Is Jewish Federation serving "cowardice" in their drinks at Federation fundraisers ?

"We respect Black leaders far more than Jewish cowardly leaders because if the KKK were coming to any campus to hold a lynch Blacks meeting everyone knows what the Black leaders would do. That meeting would be physically broken up before it happened. But our cowardly excuse for Jewish leaders and Federation preaches not to resist, just like the Jewish misleaders in Germany during the Holocaust. Let it be perfectly clear that PSM and ISM both are part and parcel of the PLO and its allies whose goal is to try to wipe out every Jew living in Israel. Simply put these are Arab Nazis, who participate as ISM was caught (Adam Shapiro) praising suicide bombings! Enough is enough! We will never back down from supporting Israel, or confronting its enemies”

GROUPS GEAR UP FOR PSM PROTESTS

by Kelly Rohrs

With only one more day until the Palestine Solidarity Movement holds its controversial annual conference at the University, multiple organizations are finalizing plans to voice their objections to PSM’s goals. Although officials expect the majority of demonstrations to be peaceful, at least one group has hinted at its desire to incite violence.

The Jewish Defense Organization, an extremist Jewish group, plans to send people to the University to prevent the conference from occurring, said Steven Schwartz, a JDO spokesperson. He did not know how many people from the New York-based group would attend.

“We’re a militant group,” Schwartz said. “This thing should be canceled. Period.”

JDO has gained notoriety since the 1990s for inciting violence at neo-Nazi gatherings. They have encouraged people not to support Duke financially and have denounced Jewish groups that have discouraged protests. “We’re going to make it absolutely clear that we believe this should be handled no differently than if the Ku Klux Klan were having a meeting to plot and plan to kill innocent blacks,” Schwartz said.

As the conference approaches, other incidents are also escalating tensions on campus.

Someone not affiliated with the University sent a phony e-mail message to about 1,700 people in the Duke community Wednesday morning. The note, purportedly from conference organizers, included militant anti-Israeli language and suggested the University condones Palestinian violence.

“The Zionists take pride in their money so we plan to hit them where it hurts: in their wallets,” the forged e-mail reads. “Together we can destroy the evil called Israel.”

Security officials tracked the message to a Verizon e-mail account in Los Angeles, Calif., but were unaware Wednesday afternoon of who was responsible for the incendiary note. A similar message was sent from an L.A. e-mail account before the PSM conference two years ago at the University of Michigan.

Duke officials sent an e-mail discrediting the original message to the entire campus community Wednesday afternoon.

Rann Bar-on, local spokesperson for PSM and a graduate student in mathematics, said the incident was handled efficiently and will not likely stir additional conflict. “We are trying to have a peaceful conference and any violent disruption will be dealt with by the appropriate security that will be determined by the University and not by us,” Bar-on said.

The Duke University Police Department is coordinating security for the conference and a variety of pro-Israeli events occurring this weekend. “Right now the plan is for the campus to remain open and to proceed normally,” DUPD Chief Clarence Birkhead said. He added that the police are prepared for any event that may occur, including large-scale, violent disturbances.

Pro-Israeli groups on campus will host a number of speakers and teach-ins during the weekend as well. The majority will take place at the Freeman Center for Jewish Life on Campus Drive. Birkhead said security for these events will be less extensive than for the PSM events, but DUPD will ensure that they take place safely. “They’re classes, and we don’t normally have security in classes,” Birkhead said.

University officials expect about 400 people to attend the conference. About 200 to 300 people have protested at previous years’ conferences.

Even though most campus groups and leaders of the local Jewish Federation discouraged demonstrations against the conference, several busloads of people-most of them from national Jewish and Zionist organizations-will descend upon the University to oppose PSM’s principles.

Sophomore Stephen Miller, president of Duke Students for Academic Freedom, is coordinating the peaceful protest efforts. He said protesters will be a constant presence at conference sites throughout the weekend.

“There is a single protest in a single place, but there are going to be lots of different players,” Miller said. “Not only is our protest non-violent, but it’s entire message, purpose and goal is for violence to be rebuked, condemned, abhorred in whatever way possible. The only violence that’s acceptable is self-defense and protection.”

Miller said about 100 pro-Israeli people will attend the PSM conference as participants to “speak out politely but firmly on behalf of Israel.”

If conference moderators find any behavior disruptive, they can remove people at their discretion, according to the PSM code of conduct.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY:

The Fire Next Time

In a blistering editorial attack (Jan. 3, 2005), the New York Post exposed the ACLU basket cases (many of them Jewish) who have lined up to become the "next Norman Siegel" by helping a bunch of notorious Arab terrorism-supporting professors at Columbia University’s Middle Eastern Studies department keep their jobs. The JDO and many members of the Jewish community have been demanding that these Jew-hating professors be fired.

Appeasement the problem. The JDO has long pointed out the source of the problem at Columbia: the unwillingness of the university’s Jewish community to draw a line in the sand. Again and again over the past few years, Jewish students at Columbia have backed away from holding public rallies and demonstrations even through the cancer within the faculty has kept on growing. Instead, the students listened to the voice of Jewish cowardice: Rabbi Charles Sheer, a timid and ever-prevaricating appeaser who until recently was the campus adviser to Jewish students. Although Sheer is finally gone, he left a malignant Neville Chamberlain-style legacy: Not only is anti-Semitism stronger than ever at Columbia, but the Jewish student community still seems paralyzed by Sheer’s spirit of appeasement.

Many of you reading this must find it difficult to imagine why so few Jews at Columbia University defied Rabbi Sheer’s cowardly advice. For instance, why didn’t the members of Hillel and other Jewish groups rally as proud Jews against the recent pro-terrorist Arab film festival?

When the JDO demanded this festival of hate be cancelled, the pathetic Rabbi Sheer restricted himself to merely writing a letter to the Columbia administration to express his ever-so-polite misgivings about the event. Rabbi Sheer regarded this as a sufficient gesture for the entire Jewish community at Columbia-and made sure that Hillel didn’t organize a single student demonstration.

But the JDO fought back! When Israeli leader Amnon Straschnow spoke at Columbia, causing Arab students to go beserk and physically assault Jewish students, Rabbi Sheer urged campus security not to arrest the assailants. But the JDO took a very different approach: The next time a pro-Israel meeting was held at Columbia, young men from the JDO Security Team were there to provide protection. Our boys paid visits before the meeting to Arab student groups; for instance, over forty JDO members and supporters went to the dorm of one of the ringleaders of the Arab violence. Columbia JDO members put up posters around the campus. The enemy was told exactly what would happen if they dared to lay a hand on Jewish students like they had done before. Thank G-D they got the message, and none of them showed up at the next pro-Israel event. We will be happy to mail you the newspaper articles about this struggle at Columbia.

Time and again in recent years, Columbia’s Black Student Union and other campus groups have invited Jew haters to speak on the campus. These apostles of hate have included Khalid Muhammed, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), and the infamous Professor Leonard (“sun people” versus “ice people”) Jeffries. Time and again the JDO warned against appeasing such individuals.

Freedom of speech for everyone BUT Jewish militants. While upholding the freedom of these three bigots to spew hate on the campus, the Columbia administration cynically attempted to bar JDO members, who do not and never have preached hate, from holding meetings on the campus to protest the growing anti-Semitism and to urge the formation of self-defense teams. Imagine: The Black Hitler Khalid Muhammed was allowed to say whatever he liked, even to call for a new Holocaust against the Jews, yet the JDO and the JDO alone was placed beyond the pale of campus “free speech”!

Such hypocrisy has deep roots at Columbia. The lying administrators at Columbia’s Teachers College for years made their auditorium available on a regular basis to the Fred Newman/Lenora Fulani cult, which calls the Jews “mass murderers of people of color” and “storm troopers of capitalism.” (Even today Teachers College has given its stamp of approval to a Newman/Fulani charity that brainwashes young people to join the hate cult.)

Columbia honored pogrom leader Sharpton. The JDO also remembers how campus radicals at Columbia honored Rev. Al Sharpton, the leader of the Crown Heights pogrom. To the JDO this was the most outrageous of all the actions at Columbia, because our Security Team had been in Crown Heights at the height of the pogrom, helping to protect Jews. We saw what it was like, and we can only hope that G-d forbid the sheltered, isolated, living-in-a-cocoon followers of Rabbi Sheer never have to experience such a pogrom, with its beatings and stabbings of Jews and the jeers of the anti-Semitic mob.

We recall how Sharpton showed up to encourage the anti-Jewish riot at Freddie’s, a clothing store on 125 Street. Yes, this Jewish-owned store was burned to the ground only a few blocks from Columbia University after Sharpton called for driving “interlopers” out of Harlem. When one of the attackers died during the fire, his fellow anti-Semites held a so-called memorial meeting at Columbia where speakers threatened to torch the “Jewniversity” and to “kill the little Jewish pig students.”

The JDO remembers how Sharod Baker, a leader of Columbia’s Black Student Organization, wrote an article in the campus newspaper calling the Jews “bloodsuckers” that need to be wiped out.

Grovelling before campus Jew-haters. One student group at Columbia, the Russian club, invited JDO leaders to speak at a protest meeting at this point. But Rabbi Sheer induced several Jewish Student Union leaders to instead open a black-Jewish “dialogue” with Baker. The JSU members served milk and cookies to this hatemonger, who naturally interpreted their groveling behavior as a sign of weakness and as the green light for even more attacks on Jews. He went on to participate in the protests in front of Freddie’s--at a time when Farrakhan supporters were threatening to burn out ANY Jewish stores that remained in Harlem.

The JDO doesn’t believe in milk and cookies for enemies of the Jews, not then, not now, not ever. We held a march against Sharod Baker and demanded the University expel him. But the cowardly Rabbi Sheer continued to preach appeasement-no rallies, no demonstrations, no self-defense.

The same thing happened when Professor Nicholas DeGenova made remarks praising the anti-Israel suicide bombers and saying he hoped a million American soldiers would be killed in Iraq. While some groups, including the JDO, participated in on-campus and off-campus rallies against him, the Jewish Student Union remained silent. Again, Rabbi Sheer preached no resistance, no rallies. At least he didn’t bring DeGenova milk and cookies.

Instead of thinking for themselves as students at an Ivy League university should do, the Jewish students at Columbia for the most part listened to, and put their safety in the hands of, the cowardly Sheer. Instead of taking militant action--holding demonstrations and organizing self-defense--they followed the advice of the appeaser!

Suicide bombers and “culture”? They also listened to Noah Lieben whose Hillel LionPAC defended the Arab terrorist film festival as a worthy cultural event. Since when is spilling Jewish blood and planting bombs to kill Jews a sign of “culture,” Noah?

When will Jewish students at campuses throughout America begin to reject the disastrous policy of appeasement practiced by the likes of Rabbi Sheer and Noah Lieben? When are they going to start holding protest rallies EVERY TIME an anti-Semitic or anti-Israel attack occurs on their campus? And when are Jewish alumni going to do what the JDO has urged for years-cut off all Jewish donations to Columbia or any other university that hires Arab terrorists for its faculty?

Menachim Begin, be like him! During World War Two, the fighters of the Irgun-the Zionist Revisionist underground led by Menachim Begin-provided defense for the Jews of pre-state Israel against Arab terror attacks. The British occupiers tolerated the Arab attacks (just as the Columbia administration tolerates attacks on Jews today), ignoring the fact that the Arabs were being financed by the very Nazis whom the British were fighting. But the Irgun launched fierce retaliatory attacks against the Arabs, thereby saving many Jewish lives (thank G-D). The Irgun also launched attacks on the British, who had turned away shiploads of Jewish refugees at Haifa simply to please the Hitler-loving Arabs.

The "moderate " leaders of the Jewish Agency were against the Irgun and opposed even the most modest forms of armed self-defense because of their belief in appeasement. They were the Rabbi Sheer’s of their day.

But finally so many Jews were murdered that the Jewish Agency leaders began to allow the Hagana (their limited self defense group) to join with the Irgun and Stern Group in attacks on the British and the Arab terrorists.

In 1946-48 everything that Irgun leader Begin had predicted came to pass: The majority of Jews in pre-state Israel became supporters of the armed Jewish Resistance to the British oppressors and the Arab terror groups.

Even though the anti-Semitic threat is still small in the United States compared to that faced by Jews in pre-state Israel, we must remain vigilant, show our willingness to fight back, and expand our capacity for armed self-defense. We must show a determination as strong as that shown by Jabotinsky, Begin, the Irgun and the Stern Group. The Jew haters and the supporters of Arab terrorism must be driven from the campus of Columbia University and every other campus where they raise their heads. *******

FROM A SPEECH BY A JDO LEADER AT THE CROWN PLAZA HOTEL IN THE LATE 1990s:

"What we are proposing is that Jews in the cities and on the campuses establish well-trained, legally armed security teams to protect Jews and synagogues from Neo-Nazis, Arab terrorists or whoever tries to murder Jews. Eventually even the do-nothing Jewish Establishment will have to imitate us--you wait and see. But we must blast those Jewish groups that sat on their hands during the Crown Heights pogrom, and have refused to form self-defense teams even after many other violent attacks on Jews."

Well, a number of Jewish Establishment groups just met to discuss forming such teams in New York. A major Jewish Establishment leader told me that when he read about the meeting, JDO popped into his mind. He said to me: “Many in mainstream Jewish groups would have been against such an idea five years ago. The JDO saw the threat clearly and had a grasp of what many of us did not want to think about but are now starting to-that Jews are in danger from terror and from anti-Semitic violence right here in America.” *******

THE JDO WAS RIGHT THEN, AND IT’S RIGHT NOW!

All those who now recognize the danger, even though they were skeptical in past years of the JDO’s predictions of increased anti-Semitic attacks, are welcome to call and join us. It is time for all Jews to recognize the handwriting on the wall-synagogues getting bombed, Jewish children getting shot at, Jews being stabbed on the street. It is not enough to feel glad that the JDO is in existence to fight back. We urge you to join us and learn self-defense. Learn the legal use of firearms, learn karate, learn security procedures, learn the teachings of the Honorable Ze’ev Jabotinsky, who always preached "Ahavat Yissrale to love one’s fellow Jew." Jabotinsky meant that we must learn to feel the pain of other Jews and--when they are threatened with attack from Neo-Nazis or Al Qaeda types-to defend them by any means necessary!

The JDO believes, like Jabotinsky, that "the door is never closed on another Jew.” We will defend Jews across the spectrum, whether conservative or liberal, religious or secular, Orthodox or Reform. Even many people who once told us that the JDO was exaggerating the danger have recently contacted us with confessionals, apologies and offers of help. Any kind of help is welcome, but we are not like certain Jewish organizations that have turned into nothing but fundraising machines. What we want most of all is for every Jew to join the JDO and learn the art of Jewish self-defense!

JDO LAUNCHES ‘OPERATION STOP TERROR’ TO DESTROY ACLU FOR HELPING ARAB TERROR GROUPS

Bravo on the editorial in the NY POST, "Columbia’s Anti-Semites," January 3, 2005. It is right on the mark, since every time Jew-haters and racists of any variety need lawyers the ACLU is there to help them terrorize Jews and the rest of society. That is why JDO marched on the homes of top ACLU frauds such as Norman Siegel and Donna Lieberman, who are always ready to defend the right of any social misfit to call for the murder of the Jews.

Be it Khalid Muhammed, the KKK, the neo-Nazis or Al-Qaeda imitators, the ACLU is always ready to spend millions of dollars to help them, just as it is now defending the Jew haters at Columbia. The JDO, however, says that Columbia’s Arab terrorist professors must be fired, and any students who support terrorist groups must be expelled! We also say that it’s time to stop the ACLU from coddling such people. That is why we have called for a TOTAL BOYCOTT of the ACLU.

The key to victory is to get our message out so widely and protest the ACLU so vigorously that contributors will finally recognize that the ACLU has become the terrorists’ safe haven. Contributions will then fall off, and the group could be put out of business permanently. We must reach all ACLU contributors and get them to stop funding this sick organization. The ACLU has become the free legal team for the KKK and the Neo-Nazis--and now for the Hamas cheerleaders on the Columbia faculty.

The question must be asked: Are the ACLU self-haters out of their minds? Don’t they know that the Arab terror groups are just waiting to do to them what Al Qaeda did to Nick Berg and Daniel Perle-slaughter them in cold blood after horrible torture just because they are Jewish? The JDO says: NEVER AGAIN!

JDO NEEDS YOUR HELP TO DESTROY THE ACLU!

BOYCOTT THIS SICK ORGANIZATION - CALL UP THE SELF-HATING JEWS IN ITS LEADERSHIP WHO ARE HELPING PRO-TERRORIST ARABS PREPARE VIOLENCE AGAINST JEWISH STUDENTS AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY!

Call the self-hating ACLU leaders and give them a real piece of your mind! Arab terrorists at Columbia and their radical leftwing allies have actually made comments praising the bombing of Jews in Israel and France as worthy acts that should be carried out again. These traitors also praised the murder of 3,000 innocent people at the World Trade Center as a legitimate protest against America!

Listed below are the three self-hating ACLU leaders who are most responsible for defending the sickness at Columbia University: Donna Lieberman, 212-344-3005, ext. 232 (her cell phone awaits your calls at 917-224-8879)

EDITORIAL

COLUMBIA U-ANTI-SEMITISM & RABBI SHEER

This is in response to the editorial in the New York Daily News of Oct 21, 2004 entitled Columbia University Must Act. Regarding the serious situation of anti-Semitic, anti-Israel activity at Columbia: that campus has had a slew of vicious Jew-Hating speakers over the years running the gamut of Black Nazi Khalid Muhammed, who called it "Columbia Jewniversity" several years ago. Additionally, there was the physical break up of a Jewish student meeting by Arab student radicals in the late 1980's who literally beat and punched Jewish students. When Louis Farrakhan follower Sharod Baker wrote a Jew-Hating screed in the Columbia Spectator, these marked the beginnings of this. It was JDO that organized demonstrations. When Columbia invited Al Sharpton ringleader of the Crown Heights pogrom to rant and rave, again JDO held street demonstrations. But time one person sat on his cowardly hands and told Jewish students, not to march and rally against the serious eruption of anti-Israel, anti-Semitic and even anti-American activities culminating in one professor praising suicide bombings against Israel, and praying for a million dead American troops in Iraq, Degenova the Degenerate of the anti-war crowd.

Now, who urged Jews to sit on their collective hands and not rally even as the Middle East Studies even had a "death to Israel, terror is good" film festival right in Columbia? Well the Jewish campus Hillel director Rabbi Charles Sheer that JDO publicly renamed "Rabbi Sheer Cowardice."

All the problems at Columbia could have been avoided if only the Jewish students would have done protests, and ignored Rabbi Sheer cowardly misleadership.

The situation today is exactly what Jabotinsky had to face 60 years ago: Jew-Hatred and murder of Jews worldwide supplemented by a cowardly Jewish Establishment unwilling, just like Sheer, to rally right in the face of the enemy, for fear of loosing the"respectability" they crave for society at large. We must take to the streets against the Israel-Haters, and Jew-Haters, and bury respectability before it buries Jews!

It was the Hon Zev Jabotinsky that time and again warned Jews of the real danger of ignoring anti-Semitic threats or any attacks and sweeping it under the rug. He termed this "beginnings" meaning you let the slightest manifestation of anti-Jewish or anti-Zionist threats or attacks go unopposed, it will eventually grow into the unabashed violence and slaughter of a pogrom or Holocaust!

Now the good news is no longer there. However will his successors organize protests just like the good Hillel at Rutgers actually did? In fact one of the main people at Rutgers referring to the passivity of their former Hillel director who never once had a rally against anti-Israel anti-Semitic outfits that came regularly to campus said " that former Hillel director spent 12 wasted years here."

Now each Hillel is being called upon to "clean house" and makes a new more militant policy of demonstrations and rallies against Arab terror run "death to Israel" rallies.

Jews must rally whenever PLO, Neo-Nazis KKK, Sharpton, or Farrakhan show their heads. The same goes for anytime the Al Qaida worshippers hold a recent Jew-Hating, Israel Hating America hating conference at Duke, blessed by a self-hating Jewish Provost Judith Ruderman who pointed out the fact Jews also support this anti-Israel conference means "not all Jews in America believe Israel has to exist."

Ruderman went on to state that Jews owe no loyalty to Israel! Perhaps Ruderman belongs to these Israel hating outfits, and could not care if the Arab terrorists destroyed every one of her fellow in Israel? Perhaps Ruderman's actual praise for Neturei Karta, and Jews Against the Occupation who marched and chanted "cut off aid to Israel now" reflects her own sick lack of self-esteem as a Jew?

The reason we focus on these people is because time and again these Jew-Haters of the various "destroy Israel” outfits could easily be blocked, and run out of any campus they try to tread in!

It will take Jewish guts, and a Jewish willingness to fight, to say loudly and clearly 'WE WILL NEVER BACK DOWN FROM SUPPORTING ISRAEL-NOR FROM CONFRONTING HER ENEMIES!

Is that hard? No it’s easy, and if Hillel or the various Jewish Establishment groups won't rally then we will! Hopefully it will inspire the Hillel directors to wake up, take to the streets and march militantly for Israel’s survival! We must not sit on our hands like American Jews did during the Holocaust! Never Again! We must bury apathy before it buries Jews!

JDO is now forming campus chapters; want to be a part of the pro-Jewish action?

The chapters are being formed to specifically fight the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic groups active in breaking up and beating Jews, threatening Israel and America across the US and the world!

Bigotry outside Faneuil Hall

By Alan Dershowitz March 5, 2004

The other day, I experienced violent anti-Semitism for the first time in my adult life. It took place in front of Faneuil Hall, the birthplace of Amer independence & liberty. I was receiving a justice award from the Jewish Council on Public Affairs & delivering a talk on "Civil Liberties in the Age of Terrorism" from the podium of that historic hall. When I left, award in hand, I was accosted by a group of screaming, angry young men & women carrying virulently anti-Israel signs. The protest was denominated a peace event & was sponsored by a group calling themselves by the vague name ACT-MA. Their website describes them as promoting peace & justice & associated with larger solidarity organizations, but there was nothing peaceful or just about this protest.

Although the signs they were carrying were not anti-Semitic, the sign carriers were shouting epithets at me that crossed the line from civility to bigotry. "Dershowitz & Hitler, just the same, the only difference is the name." The sin that, in the opinion of the screamers, warranted this comparison between me & the man who murdered dozens of my family members was my support for Israel. It was irrelevant to these chanters that I also support a Palestinian state, the end of the Israeli occupation & the dismantling of most of the settlements. They also shouted "Dershowitz and Gibbels [sic], just the same, the only difference is the name" - not even knowing how to pronounce the name of the anti-Semitic Nazi propagandist.

One sign carrier shouted that Jews who support Israel are worse than Nazis. Another demanded that I be tortured & killed. It wasn't only their words; itwas the hatred in their eyes. If a dozen Boston police were not protecting me, I have little doubt I would have been physically attacked. Their eyes were ablaze with fanatical zeal. The feminist writer Phyllis Chesler aptly described the hatred often directed against Israel & supporters of the Jewish state by some young people as eroticized. That is what I saw: passionate hatred, ecstatic hatred, orgasmic hatred. It was beyond mere differences of opinion. When I looked into their faces, I could imagine young Nazis in the 1930s in Hitler's Germany. They had no doubt that they were right & that I was pure evil for my support of the Jewish state, despite my public disagreement with some of Israel's policies & despite my support for Palestinian statehood. There was no place for nuance here. It was black & white, good versus evil, & any Jew who supported Israel was pure evil, deserving of torture, violence, & whatever fate Hitler & Goebbels deserved.

I do not believe that criticism of Israel, or even of Zionism, is tantamount to anti-Semitism & I have so written over the years. But what happened in front of Faneuil Hall went beyond criticism. To be sure, it was constitutionally protected speech, just as the Nazi march through Skokie was constitutionally protected speech. But the shouting was plainly calculated to intimidate. An aura of violence was in the air, & had the police not been there, I would not have been able to express any views counter to theirs.

As it turned out, I was not actually able to express any of my opinions, even in response to their outrageous mischaracterization of my views or their comparisons of me to the most evil men in the world. When I turned to answer one of the bigoted chants, the police officer in charge gently but firmly insisted that I walk directly to my car & not engage them. It was an order, reasonably calculated to assure my safety, & it was right. The officer got into my car with me & only got out a few blocks away. The intimidation had succeeded. I was silenced, and their horrible message went unanswered in the plaza near Faneuil Hall. That is not the way the marketplace of ideas is supposed to work. It is not the conception of liberty for which Sam and John Adams spoke so eloquently and controversially in & around Faneuil Hall more than 200 years ago. It was far more reminiscent of rallies conducted by Nazi thugs in Berlin 70 years ago.

I will not be silenced nor intimidated. The shouters know that. Their goal is to silence & intimidate others, who do not get police protection & do not have access to the media. Let the debate about Israel & the Palestinians continue unabated. Let all views be heard. The shouters in front of Faneuil Hall wanted no views but their own to be seen & heard. They succeeded that day in front of Faneuil Hall, as they have on some university campuses, but the marketplace of ideas is far too vibrant to be shut down by a bunch of self-righteous thugs shouting ugly & bigoted epithets.

BOTTOM LINE: THE MEDIA DID NOT REPORT THIS STORY. THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO PROF. DANIEL PIPES & NO ONE REPORTED IT. THE TRUTH WILL WIN OUT. SPREAD THE WORD.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY

Three months a go my brother who just happens to be the Northern Illinois University homecoming king, the director of activities for student housing, social chair of his fraternity, has one of the hardest majors in the school of business and is loved and respected throughout his campus. His name happens to be Isaac and like me, he is a huge Israeli supporter. He has an Israeli flag hanging from the rearview mirror of his car. One day, after class he came up to his car and found the word JEW scratched into the hood of his car. A police report was file under Hate Crimes and the school’s newspaper was made aware of the incident. They made up some lame excuse and did not publish an article, they did not even include the incident in the police beat section. Mark Bieganski, the Northern Star editor in chief claims that they could not find the police report (My brother gave them the report number and actually went to the police station and picked it up in under 2 minutes.) Isaac called them 3 times asking them to publish the article, he was blown off every time. Last Wednesday they published the following article justifying suicide bombers (Article by Rasmieyh Abdelnabi):

ISRAEL’S CRY FOR PITY SHOULD FALL ON DEAF EARS

As I was researching for a term paper last week, I ran across an article by the Christian Science Monitor titled, “Behind Israel’s siege mentality.” The article discusses how Israel feels alone in the world. It feels it has to defend itself against the criticism of the world. Israel believes that its only friend is the United States. Saying that this article astonished me is an understatement. I had to re-read it to make sure it was not a satirical piece. Where would anyone get the idea that the world is against Israel? Many people have voiced their opinions on Israel’s “kill anything Palestinian” defense policy. But why is that so wrong? People have voiced their opinions on suicide bombing. Before continuing any further, clarification is necessary. Suicide bombing is wrong. Killing one’s self should never be an option. Still, people need to understand why certain individuals resort to suicide bombing. Israel’s defense polices create an environment that gives Palestinians a feeling of hopelessness and despair.

Let’s take the Israeli invasion of Jenin in April 2002. The Jenin Inquiry “group of 12 internationals from the United States, Britain, Ireland, Canada and Norway, including an international lawyer ...” reported the number of Palestinians murdered was unknown. According to the United Nations and Human Rights Watch, 52 Palestinians were murdered. But the Jenin Inquiry group discovered this number was flawed because the United Nations never actually sent people to investigate but relied on outside sources. Human Rights Watch did a rather swift investigation that discounted many issues. Three researchers were sent in for only seven days. The Jenin Inquiry group had members living in Jenin during the inquiry. One member lived in the Jenin Refugee Camp from February to December 2002. According to their report, the number of dead is unknown because many people have gone missing. Many eyewitnesses said that during the invasion, many homes that were bulldozed contained people - meaning that many Palestinians were bulldozed to their deaths, such as Rachel Corrie.

Corrie was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement. An Israeli bulldozer killed her as she was protecting a house from being demolished in Gaza. She was wearing a neon-orange jacket. In Jenin from April 3 to 18, neighborhoods were “razed and flattened by tanks and bulldozers.” The JI report tells of soldier interviewed by the Israeli daily Yehidot Ahronot. The soldier told his interviewer that for three straight days, he bulldozed homes in Jenin. He stayed awake by drinking whiskey. The soldier explained the satisfaction and enjoyment he got from bulldozing and killing the people in the homes. “As far as I am concerned, I left them with a football stadium, so they can play,” he said. “This was our gift to the camp.” The inquiry group noted that for three months after the massacre in Jenin, the smell of rotting corpses was evident. This was only evident in areas that had yet to be carefully and quickly cleaned by the Israeli army. After the massacre, a number of suicide bombers came out of Jenin. The last suicide bomber was from Jenin. Coincidence? I think not. Columns reflect the opinion of the author and not necessarily that of the Northern Star staff.

At this point I realized that this is an anti-Semitic/ Pro-Terrorist paper and requested that they publish my brother’s article if they are going to publish absolute lies they might as well publish some truth. They blew me off for 3 days claiming that the editor was in Dallas and did not have a cell phone or check his e-mail. Last night the editor “spoke” with my brother, he let him know that he doesn’t have to publish this because “it’s an isolated incident” (Yeah, right! Lots of people at NIU have an Israeli flag on display. Lies, Lies and more Lies by these anti-Semites.). I requested the curtesy of a rebuttle to her article and was also told the same thing “I don’t have to publish anything, I’ll look it over and think about it.”

At this point I do not have a clear answer from the editor and thus will be contacting the conservative mass media. I would appreciate your help in my uphill battle. Anything you can do or recommend to expose these people would be very helpful.

Bellow is the article my brother wrote to the Northern Star:

My earliest memory of hate strongly impacts my life today. I was born in the Ukraine in a suburb of Kiev, in fact the little town that The Fiddler on the Roof is about. When I was four years old I witnessed the police chief’s son hurl a rock at my then eight year old brother’s head as he called him a little kike. As my weeping mother cleaned his wound her hands red with the product of hate I vowed to myself to never let hate consume my life.

My family fled Russia in 1989 to escape violent anti-Semitism and found refuge in the United States. Primarily having been raised here I was fortunate not to experience such scaring events as did my brother and parents. I am thankful to America for giving me the innocent childhood that every boy and girl deserves.

Following my brothers footsteps I arrived at NIU in 2001. I have built myself a nice little niche here in DeKalb through involvement in organizations, volunteering, and an active social life. NIU was the last place I expected to fall victim to serious anti-Semitism. To my surprise as I walked to my car (parked outside of Barsema hall) after my class in early September I found both drivers side doors keyed and the word “Jew” scratched into my car hood. I have an Israeli flag hanging from my rearview mirror in support of my Jewish homeland. I was enraged at the sight and immediately went to the police station to file a report after which I made my way to the Northern Star office where a very sympathetic Asseah Hussein took my story and even pictures of my vandalized car. Maybe with all the violence in the Middle East my story wasn’t applicable.

Hate is a serious passion and it takes a certain kind of audacity and cowardice to commit a hate crime in the middle of the day on a busy street. If there is an anti-Jewish or anti-Israeli sentiment on this campus I’m sure it has little to do with the evident anti-Semitic autograph so prevalent on the hood of my car.

I didn’t have the heart to tell my parents about my vehicle because they had sacrificed everything familiar to them to give my brother and me the opportunity to grow up away from words like kike and hate sprung blood. It would break their hearts to know they sent their son to an academic environment where this kind of hate and cowardice is present.

The scar on my brother’s head ignites the scare in my heart every time I look at his forehead. My brother’s bully directed his hatred towards a person. The coward that so diligently made my hood aware of its driver paid me no such consideration. Hate accomplishes nothing and I hope that on the eve of opening of the NIU Unity in Diversity Poster Gallery everyone reading this understands that a college environment is place for open minds to mesh and share Ideas. To think that we walk these academic halls with people who would perform such an act is inconceivable.

And this is the Editorial I wrote them:

TERRORIST SUPPORTER WRITES FOR NORTHERN STAR.

In response to the latest piece of hatred by Rasmieyh Abdelnabi I would like to cleanse your minds of her dirty anti-Semitic and anti-American propaganda. In her "Israel's cry for pity should fall on deaf ears" article she states "Suicide bombing is wrong. Killing one's self should never be an option". Killing ones self is never an option? How about the 40 innocent civilians this terrorist takes with him or her. Oh this is not a concern for Rasmieyh Abdelnabi because these innocent civilians are kids in kindergarten, cafe patrons, teenagers in dance clubs, and your parent on their morning commute. Apparently according to Rasmieyh 40 innocent Jewish lives are not worth as much as one hate driven terrorist suicide bomber. These so called religious martyrs are all too eager to give up the lives of their Jewish cousins to get their spot in heaven among their 72 virgin harems. Rasmieyh talks of horrible conditions they are forced to live in, stating that she understands why suicide bombers exist. She never stops to look for the true cause of these horrible conditions. Mr. Yasser Arafat (a native Egyptian), the "brave and noble" leader of the "Palestinian" people of whom only about 10% are of true Palestinian decent funnels the relief funds to his Swiss bank accounts, his wife and child in France and to furnish a multi million dollar mansion the Israeli government built him in an Israeli resort town of Eilat. The money donated by numerous countries including the US and Israel to better the lives of the "Palestinian" people are going to Arafat's bank accounts and to sponsor terrorist organizations. Arafat is once again under investigation for smuggling relief money into his private accounts. It is in Arafat's best interest to keep this conflict alive in order to extrude "relief" money from sympathizing nations. This is your true enemy, not the Jews, not the Americans not the Israelis.

The September 11th terrorist were apparently so disturbed by the American greed and moral corruption that they had to visit a local strip club prior to their religious crusade to New York City. These "martyrs" are cowards. Terrorists killing our American brothers and sisters in Iraq today are no different from the cowardly animals hiding themselves behind innocent women and children in refugee camps like Jenin. Differences between terrorists should not be drawn. The same people Rasmieyh supports and sympathizes with are the same coward barbarians that RAPED our nation on September 11th.

The Northern Star should not be a forum for Rasmeiyh to develop her al-Qaida sympathizing Al Jazeera application portfolio. All though I am sure the Northern Star does not mean to portray a Pro-Terrorist and Anti-Semitic image, Rasmieyh Abdelnabi is helping the Star do just that with great success.

JDO PLANS PROTEST AGAINST ANTI-SEMITIC ANTI-ISRAEL ANTI-AMERICA HATE GROUP AT COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND

Staten Island Advance

Together at protest, far apart in beliefs CSI students spar over publication of pro-PLO terror poem in college newspaper

Friday, May 16, 2003

By JODI LEE REIFER

ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

Standing barely a foot apart, the 21-year-old political science major confronted the sophomore clothed in an Israeli military T-shirt. "I don't understand why the paper is being attacked," said Zara, a poli-sci major from Brooklyn who would not give her last name, making a case for a free Palestine before her new-found sparring partner. "I just don't think that anything that attacks any people should be published," Jeni Sznes of New Springville shot back. The students crossed paths yesterday at the center of the College of Staten Island (CSI) at a demonstration about the publication of a pro- Palestinian poem in a college newspaper. Like some others, Ms. Sznes believes the poem, "Stones of Freedom," published in the March edition of The College Voice, contains anti- Semitic language. She was particularly offended by two lines in the poem: "You are truly devils and worship No God" and "We will never ever cede to your sadistic holocaust [sic] filled thesis." The poem's author, Omar Hammad, 21, a junior, has said it was an attack on the Israeli government, not Jews.

In a statement distributed at the demonstration, he apologized to offended students, saying: "I never intended for people to think that I was mocking the Holocaust, this horrifies me and goes against all my principals as a Muslim and as a decent human being." Hammad did not appear at yesterday's demonstration, which was orchestrated by the militant Jewish Defense Organization (JDO), a Manhattan-based group dismissed by mainstream Jewish organizations. The event drew about 45 students. Speaking into a megaphone at the fountains by the Student Center, Mordechai Levy of the JDO blared, "The College Voice is a rag. A hate rag."

He secured a permit to demonstrate in an attempt to force CSI President Dr. Marlene Springer to shut down The Voice, a student-run newspaper funded with student fees. Levy, the representative of the JDO at the demonstration, called The Voice a "cancer on the campus." The college paper did not stage an anti-JDO rally because its editors believe in the freedom of speech guaranteed by the First Amendment, said co-editor Renee Marhong. "It's unfortunate that a poem was misinterpreted, but I don't want to stop them," she said. While several demonstrators said they backed the JDO's efforts to shutter The College Voice, others said they turned out to support Israel. "I believe it's our duty as Americans to show solidarity with our allies," said demonstrator Matthew DeSio, who called the rally's showing disappointing. "Staten Island is a complacent society. Nobody cares. I think it's important that issues like this are brought to light." DeSio, a CSI freshman, said he wasn't there to protest the newspaper's right to publish, but rather the content of the poem.

The militant Jewish Defense Organization plans a protest, against a radical anti-war group whose recent paper the College Voice published a statement mocking the Holocaust, attacking Israel, as well as continuing a long history as a Marxist group that also spreads hated against America. JDO pointed out that the writer of the anti-Semitic pro-terror screed Omar Hammad (Hammad, Omar 63 -19 Borden Ave 718-205-2393 - IF YOU CALL DO NOT MAKE THREATS BUT SIMPLY EXPRESS YOUR OPINION ABOUT HIS POETRY. DO NOT CALL MORE THAN ONCE.) has angered many Jews, all of whom want CSI President Marlene Springer (college president) to shut down the hate spouting radical rag and hate America anti-war rag College Voice down. JDO spokesman David Segal was quick to point out that" this rag is following in the footsteps of De Genova the Columbia professor who hoped that US troops would be slaughtered in Iraq. The same rag is part of the same anti-war groups that like De Genova are happy when Israelis or Americans are slaughtered by radical Moslem terrorist groups. JDO is no stranger to fighting this radical group having marched several years ago against Black Nazi Leonard Jeffries who hates Jews, whites and America, that the College Voice crowd tried to bring to speak at College of Staten Island, which JDO stopped. "Now we must rally and march to get that cowardly excuse for a college president, Marlene Springer, to get off her cowardice and shut down this vile anti-Semitic, anti- Israel, America-hating group whose most recent actions was holding rallies calling for "victory to Iraq."

The protest will be THURSDAY MAY 15 at COLLEGE of STATEN ISLAND

Meanwhile JDO website and flyers are being distributed giving out President Springer's office # 718-982-2400 urging people to call her non stop to demand that the anti-Semitic anti-Israel pro- terror pro-Saddam anti-America rag be shut down permanently.

Anti-Israel, Anti-Semitic Poem Sparks Outrage on a CUNY Campus

By ERIC WOLFF Special to the Sun

An anti-Israel, anti-Semitic poem in the College Voice, a College of Staten Island student newspaper, has provoked outrage on this CUNY campus in the heart of New York’s smallest borough. Titled "Stones of Freedom," the poem has the rhythm and rhyme of a rap, calls Israel’s prime minister, Ariel Sharon, "the Dark Terrorist Emperor" and declares, "We will never ever cede to your sadistic/holocaust filled thesis." Calling for an end to "imperialist" Israeli control of the West Bank, the verse was published against the background of an orange and white photograph of a Palestinian Arab throwing a rock.

Debate in the student body swirled around the balconied student center, where a "Discover Jesus" sing-along was taking place. At the center of it all is the poem’s author, Omar Hammad, a junior. Though he refused all interviews, he released a statement yesterday in which he apologized for possible misinterpretation and said, "There were never any malicious intentions." "I never intended for people to think that I was mocking the Holocaust," he said. "This horrifies me and goes against all my principles as a Muslim and as a decent human being." The office of the College Voice is covered in protest posters revealing the paper’s "commitment to the rights of working people."

The editors declined to comment, saying they did not wish to add to the pressure on Mr. Hammad. Across the atrium, from her desk in the student government office, Student Senator Michelle Payton-Garret said, "I know the person who wrote the poem. He meant no malice. We’re in college. We should be broadening our horizons." The College of Staten Island Association oversees the distribution of the $75-a-student activity fee with which all student newspapers are funded. Under law, the association cannot cut the funding of the College Voice. But association member Shmuel Gerber, a senior at the college, said he wishes it could.

"The poem could easily be construed to apply to Jewish people in general, not just Israel," he said. The administration declined to take a stand on the issue, citing the First Amendment rights of the paper to publish and saying that the articles in the Voice "in no way represent" its views.

Whether the campus will be mollified by Mr. Hammad’s apology remains to be seen. The Jewish Defense Organization has organized a protest for Thursday demanding that College President Marlene Springer shut down the College Voice. Editors at the College Voice told The New York Sun that Mr. Hammad had met with members of the moderate Jewish group, Hillel, and come to the understanding that resulted in Mr. Hammad’s apology. Representatives of Hillel could not be reached. Eating lunch on the ground floor and trying to ignore the din from the stage, many students said they hadn’t read the poem at all and that they rarely look at the 20-page journal.

Edwin Chu, a freshman, said, "It’s offensive. It targets a certain religion, I don’t need to read stuff like that." No accurate count has been made of the religious make up of the 12,000-strong student body, but some campus Muslims agreed with the anti-occupation sentiment of the poem, if not the specifically anti-Jewish interpretation. "It was good," said Maha Said, a Muslim student. "If another paper published something against our people, we couldn’t do anything."

STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

A poem calling for a free Palestine in a student-run political journal at the College of Staten Island has provoked threats to its Muslim author and an outcry from Jewish groups. "Stones of Freedom" in The College Voice has not stirred an uproar on campus, but that hasn't diminished the fervor with which the organizations have attacked the work as anti-Semitic. The poem labels Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon the "Dark Terrorist Emperor." Omar Hammad, a 21-year-old junior at CSI, decried the charges against his poem as "an absolute joke," and said it was an attack on the Israeli government, not Jews. The poem was Hammad's first contribution to The College Voice, a free campus newspaper paid for by student fees. The editors claim the paper accepts submissions representing a variety of political views.

The militant Jewish Defense Organization (JDO), a Manhattan-based group repudiated by mainstream Jewish organizations, has branded Hammad a "filthy Arab extremist," and called CSI President Dr. Marlene Springer "a cowardly excuse for a president" for not shutting down the publication. JDO spokesman Steven Wexler said the group has a permit to demonstrate Thursday on campus. He said it would be an effort to "strangle The College Voice." A campus Jewish organization, Hillel, has been less vitriolic in its stance, but it has called on The College Voice editors to issue an apology and re-examine the newspaper's publishing standards. THREATS MADE

Since the poem was printed in March, the newspaper has received about a dozen phone calls from people who have threatened to harm Hammad and other staff members, according to writers and editors. Hammad, who hails from Staten Island, said he has not reported the threats to authorities but he is taking them seriously. For that reason, he asked that his home community not be published. Editors of The College Voice said they have informed college administrators of the phone calls, which they attributed to a pugnacious minority. "I am in fear of a few, but not the campus in general," Hammad said during an interview in the school's student center. "Even to be mentioned in the same breath as anti-Semitism is disturbing. It goes against everything I believe as a Muslim." Jewish groups have been particularly incensed by two lines in the poem: "You are truly devils and worship no god" and "We will never ever cede to your sadistic holocaust filled thesis." "[Hammad] doesn't belong on the campus and he doesn't belong in the country," said the JDO's Wexler. "He is an Arab terrorist. He identifies himself as an Arab extremist, no different than al-Qaida."

When told of the threats to Hammad and others, Wexler said, "We don't know anything about that, but I could care less." Distancing itself from the JDO, Hillel said it would not support Thursday's demonstration. It also stressed that there has been no indication of animosity between Muslim and Jewish students on campus. "It's difficult as a member of the Jewish community to read [the poem] and not feel that it is a personal attack on me," said Hillel Director Frances A. Gidalowitz. "If his point was to [attack the Israeli government] it could have been said in a hundred different ways." ADMINISTRATION CRITICIZED

Both Hillel and the JDO sharply criticized the administration of being apathetic toward the issue. In a statement, Dr. Springer said she has received several complaints about the poem, but that The College Voice has a First Amendment right to publish material at the discretion of its editorial board. Her statement added that the college has a responsibility to "oppose all incidents of religious or ethnic bias ... on our campus." Dr. Springer did not answer repeated Advance requests for comment on the poem and the criticism of her by the JDO. Responding to questions about the threats to students, CSI Acting Vice President of Finance and Administration Tom Tyburczy said in a statement that student safety is a top priority. Ayman El-Sayed, editor of The College Voice, said he would not issue an apology nor reevaluate its publishing standards. He said the newspaper would accept rebuttals to the poem from students. Hammad said he would welcome the opportunity to meet with Jewish students to explain his poem.

LATEST ON DEGENOVA

In their attempts to silence a controversial professor at Columbia University, members of a militant Jewish organization now complain that they are the ones being silenced.

The Columbia Daily Spectator, a student newspaper, rejected an advertisement by the Jewish Defense Organization that called for the firing of Nicholas De Genova, an assistant professor of anthropology and Latino studies. Mr. De Genova has been the target of death threats since he said last month that he wished Iraq would defeat the United States, and that he hoped for "a million Mogadishus," a reference to a 1993 battle in which 18 American soldiers were killed.

In a recent interview with The Chronicle, he largely stood by his comments.

The student newspaper's publisher, Amit Melwani, did not return repeated telephone calls, but in an interview with Newsday, he said the Spectator does not run political ads. He added that the Jewish group should have submitted a letter to the editor about Mr. De Genova.

"We called him a traitor," says Jeff Adler, the organization's spokesman. "He hates America. He doesn't belong here. There's a thing called loyalty." The group's Web site features animated images of automatic weapons and says that "peace-movement traitors hate America and hate Israel."

Mr. Adler says the ad would have called on students to demand the ouster of "this pig professor."

"The same people who say free speech for him try to silence us," Mr. Adler says. "They're hypocrites. We're not."

Columbia Paper Rejects Ad Pillorying Professor

A militant Jewish group complained yesterday that a Columbia University student newspaper rejected its ad demanding that professor Nicholas De Genova be fired.

The publisher of the Columbia Daily Spectator said he turned down the ad because it was "political" and engaged in "name-calling."

The advertisement submitted by the Jewish Defense Organization called De Genova - who last week said he wanted to see "a million Mogadishus" - an "enemy of Israel" and an "enemy of America." It asked readers to call Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger and demand that he dismiss De Genova. "This pig professor is extended more rights than the Jewish Defense Organization. Where is our free speech to run him out of his job?" complained Jeff Adler, a spokesman in New York for the JDO. Adler said the group had paid $98 for its submission and thought it was going to be published Monday. Yesterday, the group got a call from Spectator publisher Amit Melwani, who said it would not be allowed to run in the paper.

Melwani, 20, a Columbia junior, said the JDO should have submitted a letter to the editor rather than an ad. "We just felt that it wasn't something that needed to be expressed in an advertisement," Melwani said. He said the paper has guidelines against running political ads.

De Genova has been the object of death threats since Friday, when Newsday published comments he made at a March 26 anti-war teach-in at Columbia. The professor called for the defeat of U.S. troops in Iraq and said he'd like to see "a million Mogadishus" - a reference to the Somali city where 18 U.S. soldiers were killed in an ambush in 1993. Yesterday, De Genova, an assistant professor of anthropology, did not show up for his scheduled class. Other faculty members said he has been in hiding. Meanwhile, a half-dozen students who served in the military held an anti-De Genova meeting.

"It's easy to say, 'I wish a soldier to die' to a bunch of 19-year-olds," said Shane Hachey, 27, who said he was in the Army from 1993 to 1998. "It's different to say, 'I wish a bunch of soldiers would die' to a bunch of soldiers."

Elsewhere on campus, another student said De Genova damaged the anti-war effort. "It hijacked the anti-war movement on this campus," Dan Binder, 20, a history major, said of the professor's remarks.

JEW HATING, ISRAEL HATING, AMERICA HATING PROFESSOR DESERVES PUNISHMENT!!!

Eric Czarnik

George Orwell is believed to have said that some ideas are so absurd that only an intellectual would believe them. Last week, he was proved right. At Columbia University, 30 faculty members convened last Wednesday for an anti-war "teach- in" on the war in Iraq, according to Newsday and Columbia's campus newspaper, The Columbia Spectator.

Predictably, the teach-in disintegrated into an indoctrination session, complete with professors comparing President Bush to the Nazis and snidely deeming him to be "unelected." But what one professor said was so disgusting, even his antiwar colleagues were shocked. Nicholas De Genova, an assistant professor of anthropology, wished for American soldiers to die in combat and for America to lose the war. "The only true heroes are those who find ways to help defeat the U.S. military," said De Genova. "I would personally like to see a million Mogadishus." As you may know, Mogadishu is the city where 18 American soldiers were ambushed and killed during a 1992-93 humanitarian mission in Somalia.

When the media broadcasted a dead, mutilated American being dragged through the streets by cheering Somalis, President Clinton buckled under pressure and withdrew our troops. America's defeat delighted our enemies. Osama bin Laden gloated about it in his 1996 "Declaration of War Against the Americans." "After vigorous propaganda about the power of the U.S., ...you left the area carrying disappointment, humiliation, defeat, and your dead with you," bin Laden said. "The extent of your impotence and weaknesses became very clear."

Saddam Hussein also seems to have been emboldened by the Mogadishu defeat. Time magazine reported this week that Iraqi leadership might be distributing copies of "Black Hawk Down" (a movie about the battle) as a guide to vanquishing American resolve. After De Genova made his "million Mogadishus" remark, Newsday said the audience was largely silent. But it applauded when he said, "If we really believe that this war is criminal...then we have to believe in the victory of the Iraqi people and the defeat of the U.S. war machine."

Of course, a U.S. defeat would also ensure a defeat for the Iraqi people, who would continue to suffer under Saddam's fascist regime. Even as coalition forces try to avoid civilian casualties, Iraqi troops are firing upon fleeing civilians in Basra, according to the Associated Press.

Indeed, the only victor from a U.S. defeat would be Saddam, who would remain in power, as a testimony to a weak America -which might be what De Genova precisely wants. "Peace is not patriotic," De Genova said. "Peace is subversive, because it anticipates a very different world from the one in which we live - a world where the U.S. would have no place." He also said people who consider themselves as "patriots" are really white supremacists, which I'm sure would be a shock to Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

By condemning patriotism and wanting Saddam's storm troopers to kill Americans, De Genova portrays himself as an anti-American fanatic who indirectly supports Saddam's bloody regime. He is a disgrace in an American academia already stained with widespread left-wing bias.

To the university's credit, the New York Post said that Columbia President Lee Bollinger denounced De Genova's beliefs as "cross(ing) the line." And Eric Foner, the teach-in's organizer, said the professor's remarks were "completely uncalled for" and "idiotic." But Foner also said De Genova's statements were likely to go unpunished. Does anyone honestly believe that a professor with such seething hatred toward our country could conduct himself professionally in a room where some of his students might be combat veterans? And when our troops come home, could they expect to be graded fairly by a man who wished them dead?

It's true that De Genova has the First Amendment right to speak his opinions without government penalty (something that he certainly wouldn't have in Iraq). But freedom of speech does not mean the speaker is free from the consequences of such speech. In this case, consequences could include being fired, or at least disciplined, for sullying Columbia's reputation.

Taxpayers shouldn't be obligated to line the pockets of a professor who openly desires the deaths of those who serve their country. If Columbia refuses to punish De Genova, the American people should collectively exercise the power of the pocketbook to show that such inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated or sanctioned. Corporate donors and alumni who contribute to Columbia's coffers should stop making contributions to the university until the nutty professor apologizes, resigns or is removed. Meanwhile, patriotic students should consider boycotting any future classes taught by him.

While our men and women are fighting oversees, let it be our duty to support them and wish them well. Even if you are adamantly against the war, please don't hatefully target our troops for following their commander in chief's orders. After all, our soldiers already have enough people targeting them as it is.

The militant Jewish Defense Organization is launching a protest campaign to demand that Columbia University fire the bigoted professor. "It is interesting that less than a year ago this pig professor De Genova made statements mocking the Holocaust, praising the World Trade Center bombing, and attacking Israel. Now this swine attacks America, and JDO and many people patriotic to America should flood Columbia and its waffling president to demand the immediate firing of DeGenova,” said JDO National Director Mordechai Levy.

JDO is also calling upon all alumni to cut off all contributions to this base of radical anti-Israel and anti-America activity that stabs brave American soldiers in the back. JDO also called upon the tepid leaders of the Jewish Student Union and its director Rabbi Sheer to support an upcoming rally in the campus calling upon Columbia University to fire De Genova enemy of Israel, enemy of America to be fired. So far the Jewish Student Union has refused to call for a rally to support the troops, and condemn both DeGenova, and his other anti-war traitors.

"JDO is urging everyone that supports Israel, and everyone that supports America two allies to flood the leaders of the Jewish Student Union with messages that they must put together a huge demonstration against Professor De Genova demanding he be fired for supporting slaughtering American troops."

JDO BLASTS COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY JEWISH GROUP HILLEL AND ITS RABBI FOR INVITING ISRAEL HATING GROUP TO SPEAK ON CAMPUS AND KRAFT CENTER

The JDO has condemned a Columbia University Jewish group, Hillel for inviting an anti-Israel group called "Courage to Refuse" that is made of far left Israelis currently in jail for not wanting to really be in the Israeli Army using the excuse of wanting to serve in Judea and Samaria ( the so called West Bank) and Jerusalem. The group believes in letting Arab terrorists like PLO and Hamas run rampant and is sympathetic "Adam Shapiro style" to PLO goal to destroy Israel. In fact top Israeli officials have called for prosecution of the group on treason and sedition charges for trying to convince other Israeli soldiers to not do their duty to defend their fellow Jews, and refuse to obey Israeli Army orders. The group tries to hide the fact that its ideological founders are long time members of such treasonous groups as the viciously anti-Israel ISRAEL COMMUNIST PARTY who are fond of lyingly comparing Tsahal the Israel Defense Forces to "the Nazis". These people were recently caught putting out flyers threatening Israeli officers, with inflammatory anti-Israel leaflets at their homes. MANY ARE ANGRY THAT THIS COLLECTION OF SELF- HATING ISRAELI FAR LEFT ADVOCATES OF TREASON AGAINST ISRAEL WERE HONORED AND INVITED TO SPEAK AT HILLEL OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY !!

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY "PROFESSOR" EQUATES ZIONISM WITH RACISM

Calling Israel a “racist Jewish state”, a Columbia University professor has proposed replacing it with a bi-national entity as a means of ensuring that “the colonial Zionist project will come to an end.”

In an article appearing in the February 26 issue of the Egyptian English-language newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly, Joseph Massad, an Assistant Professor of Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia, argues that there is an “immediate necessity for a unified Palestinian leadership to lead the struggle against Zionism.” Massad blasts PA Chairman Yasser Arafat for his “concessions” to Israel, and accuses him of having undermined international support for “the right of the Palestinians to resist the occupation.”

“Arafat and the PLO,” says Massad, “dropped their opposition to a racist Israel and transformed themselves, under the guise of the PA, into enforcers of the occupation.”

Declaring Israel to be “the last remaining racist colonial state”, Massad also voices irritation that the United Nations voted in 1991 to repeal its infamous 1975 resolution which equated Zionism with racism.

“Zionism has remained as racist in its ideology and practices as it has always been,” he asserts.

JDO TRIES BLOCKING UPCOMING PLO "DEATH TO ISRAEL" FILM FESTIVAL AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

Starting January 24 Moslem terrorists including long time PLO leaders and Hamas supporters are holding a film festival showing propaganda films in which "Arab freedom fighters" terrorist baby killers murder Jews in Israel and try to destroy it. This evil event is officially sponsored by Columbia University, and the key note speaker attacking our fellow Jews in Israel will be Edward Said a Columbia University professor whose picture was taken throwing huge rocks at the Israeli Army. A large number of hard core Arab terrorists including even Al Qaeda supporters, and supporters of Saddam Hussein who recently led "death to America" rallies in campuses like Berkeley and Washington DC to try and stop America from winning against Saddam Hussein. Simply put Columbia is allowing a hate Israel and hate America film fest. HELP JDO STOP IT!!!

First e mail the president of Columbia Pres Bollinger and demand that this anti-Semitic terror event be cancelled!

ARAB TERRORIST OFFERED JOB AT COLUMBIA

An article in the Sun about Arab terrorist Rashid Khallidi being offered a job at Columbia speaks reams. "Khallidi if Offered Chair at Columbia" Nov 5, 2002 reveals exactly what the JDO has been fighting to keep out of Columbia and other campuses Arab terrorist professors who truly hate Israel, and America. JDO specially warned Columbia's Jewish chaplain Rabbi Sheer that vicious anti-Israel, anti-Semitic groups led by Israel hating faculty consisting of both Moslem extremists and their communist far left allies like International Action Committee were planning to invade numerous campuses including Columbia. JDO was, as usual proven right. We also predict that these Jew-Hating, Israel hating, radicals will try the same riots against Jewish students at Columbia like they are doing in numerous other campuses. There is only one way to respond, that is for all Jewish students holding mass rallies with other campus groups that are patriotic to call on Columbia University to not hire Rashid and even to fire rock throwing Arab terrorist Ed Said. Also that all alumni must be told exactly what the President of Columbia is doing, and have them cut off all contributions. Bollinger is slapping all Jews in the face when he post 9-11 he can hire an outright open Arab terrorist to teach anything at Columbia. The Jewish faculty at Columbia better get some courage as well to stand up to a Columbia administration whose sympathies lie with those plotting the destruction of Jews in Israel.

It amazes us that so many of this same Columbia faculty were quick to seize buildings and get arrested in confrontations with the police during their flirtation with SDS and the Weathermen. Now, these same faculty many Jewish are invisible when a supporter of genocide against Jews is being offered a teaching position at their school. They real have a lot to learn.

ALL ANGRY JEWS MUST CALL THE PRESIDENT OF COLUMBIA BOLLINGER AT 212-854-1754 BETWEEN 9-7 PM TELL HIM DO NOT HIRE ARAB TERRORIST KHALLIDI. Copy the story above e-mail everyone you know!!!!

JEW HATRED AT HARVARD HALLOWED HALLS

The current issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education discusses a controversy at Harvard where President Larry Summers, chastised as anti-Semitic a group of left wing, politically correct faculty bigots. The group is led by a chaired psychology professor Ken Nakayama. Professor Nakayama had led a petition drive that garnered about 120 signatures of Harvard and MIT faculty urging the two institutions to divest all investments in firms that do business in Israel. There is little doubt that President Summers is correct in his assessment that Professor Nakayama is anti-Semitic as are his co-signers.

Professor Nakayama holds an endowed chair at Harvard and does research in pscho-biology, involving vision. He possibly receives grants from public sources. Although I do not have any information, I would guess that he receives money from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and if not, he would like to. Creating a controversy with NSF would do considerable damage to him.

I have written several letters to President Bush urging a freezing of all NSF funding of Harvard's psychology department from NSF grants pending an investigation of Professor Nakayama's use of his position at Harvard to advocate anti-Semitism. I am going to write a number of additional letters directly to NSF and other elected officials.

If your organization could write similar letters, possibly with copies to Professor Nakayama, I believe the cause of anti-Semitic political correctness will receive a blow. If there are several hundred letters challenging Nakayama's research grants, and calling him the bigot that he is, the politically correct dirtbag will quiet down fast.

THE WAR ON CAMPUS

Daniel Pipes

September 17, 2002 -- LAST week, two prominent Middle Easterners traveled to two North American campuses to deliver speeches mainly about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Both met protests. One succeeded in giving the speech; the other did not. Therein hangs a tale.

On Monday, former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu went to Concordia University in Montreal to explain why "there is no alternative to winning this war [on terrorism] without delay." But he never spoke at Concordia - indeed, he never made it onto the campus - because a thousand anti-Israel demonstrators staged a mini-riot with the intent of preventing him from speaking; "Benjamin Netanyahu is coming to Montreal. Let's make it clear he's not welcome," read their signs.

The anti-Israel forces physically assaulted the would-be audience. A female professor of religion at Concordia recounted how some of them "aimed their punches at my breasts." They smashed a plate-glass window and threw objects at the police inside. They hurled furniture at police from a mezzanine. As Toronto's Globe & Mail put it, "By lunchtime, the vestibule of Concordia's main downtown building was littered with paper, upturned chairs, broken furniture and the choking aftereffects of pepper spray."

The police, saying they couldn't assure Netanyahu's safety, canceled the event. To which Wassim Moukahhal, an Arab leader at nearby McGill University, crowed: "The man is a war criminal. We don't want our city and our universities to be the harbor of such a war criminal." Nor was this the first time Netanyahu has been prevented from speaking on campus. In November 2000, "hundreds of raucous protesters" managed to cancel his appearance at the University of California/Berkeley.

On Thursday, Hanan Ashrawi, the former spokeswoman and colleague of Yasser Arafat, went to Colorado College in Colorado Springs to give a keynote speech at a symposium on "September 11: One Year Later." Protestors noted that Ashrawi is smack on the side of America's enemies in the War on Terrorism. For example, while the U.S. government formally designates Hamas a terrorist group, Ashrawi states she doesn't "think of Hamas as a terrorist group." Also, she considers Israeli civilians living on the West Bank to be "legitimate . . . targets of Palestinian resistance" - that is, legitimate targets for deadly violence.

The many objections to Ashrawi's being honored at Colorado College centered on her obnoxious presence at an event dealing with the aftermath of Sept. 11. Colorado Gov. Bill Owens spoke for many when he said, "It's outrageous to be bringing this woman, who has done so much to divide the Middle East and has applauded terrorism." Both of the state's U.S. senators objected. Rudolph Giuliani added: "I wouldn't have invited her. Cancel it."

But she did speak, without any interference. The protests were completely non-violent, including nothing more than scattered boos, hand-held signs and a rebuttal after the speech (given by this writer).

These two parallel yet contrasting episodes point to several conclusions:

* Both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict are seeking to shift the terms of the debate. The pro-Israel side wants to delegitimize speakers who effectively call for the destruction of the Jewish state. The anti-Israel side wants to block speakers sympathetic to Israel.

* Both incidents point to profound problems in the university, and why Abigail Thernstrom calls it "an island of repression in a sea of freedom." In Colorado, the administration made the morally idiotic choice of honoring an apologist for terrorism. At Concordia, a weak-kneed response let thugs inhibit free speech.

* The incidents also point to the differing faces of pro- and anti-Israel activism, with the former acceptably political and the latter crudely violent. The first resembles the restrained actions of the Israeli armed forces. The second represents a North American face of the suicide bombings.

Or, in the most elemental terms, we see here the contrast between the civilized nature of Israel and its friends versus the raw barbarism of Israel's enemies. It promises to be a hot political year on campus. How things turn out will depend on which form of activism prevails - the holding of pink sheets of paper with "I disagree" written on them, or the throwing of chairs from balconies.

ISRAEL UNDER ATTACK AT HARVARD - DANIEL PIPES

IMAGINE it's June 1942 - just a few months after Adolf Hitler declared war on the United States. At Harvard University, a faculty committee has chosen a German-American to give one of three student orations at the festive commencement ceremony. He titles it "American Kampf," purposefully echoing the title of Hitler's book, "Mein Kampf" ("My Struggle") in order to show the positive side of "Kampf."

When this prompts protests, a Harvard dean defends it as a "thoughtful oration" that defines the concept of Kampf as a personal struggle "to promote justice and understanding in ourselves and in our society." The dean promises, "The audience will find his oration, as did all the Harvard judges, a light of hope and reason in a world often darkened by distrust and conflict."

Then the student turns out to be past president of the Harvard German Society, a group with a pro-Nazi taint - but the administration still isn't bothered. Nor is it perturbed that he praised a Nazi front group for its "incredible work" as well as its "professionalism, compassion and dedication to helping people in dire need," then raised money for it.

Far-fetched? Sure. But exactly this scenario unfolded last week at Harvard. Just replace "German," "Nazi," and "Kampf" with "Islamic," "militant Islamic" and "jihad."

Faculty members chose Zayed Yasin, 22 and the past president of the Harvard Islamic Society, to deliver a commencement address. He earlier had sung the praises of and raised money for the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, a militant Islamic group closed down by President Bush.

Yasin titled his talk "American Jihad," echoing Osama bin Laden's jihad against the United States. Yasin declared an intention to convince his audience of 32,000 that "Jihad is not something that should make someone feel uncomfortable."

Hmm. The authoritative "Encyclopaedia of Islam" defines jihad as "military action with the object of the expansion of Islam," and finds that it "has principally an offensive character." The scholar Bat Ye'or explains for non-Muslims through history this has meant "war, dispossession . . . slavery and death." That does indeed sound like "something that should make someone feel uncomfortable."

Sadly, this episode is no aberration, but indicative of two important developments.

Apologizing for militant Islam: Hiding jihad's awful legacy is standard operating procedure at Harvard. A professor of Islamic history portrays jihad as "a struggle without arms." The Harvard Islamic Society's faculty adviser defines true jihad as no more fearsome than "to do good in society." All this is part of a pattern of pretending Islam had nothing to do with 9/11.

Neutral in wartime. Harvard appears neutral in the current war, as Harvard Business School student Pat Collins pointed out in a scathing Washington Times op-ed. Take the example of Hamas: While President Bush has called it "one of the deadliest terrorist organizations in the world today," a Harvard spokesman replies "no comment" when asked if it is a terrorist organization and the university has allowed fund-raising on its premises on behalf of Hamas.

Even today, militant Islamic groups have full access to university facilities and the right to advertise their activities. Yet the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), a training program for the U.S. armed forces, is the only student group at Harvard to be denied access to university facilities and disallowed from advertising its activities.

Unfortunately, Harvard's stance is typical of nearly all North America universities. Almost every Middle East specialist hides the truth about jihad and (as shown by a chilling report from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, Defending Civilization) almost every campus drips contempt for the U.S. war effort (typical statement: "The best way to begin a war on terrorism might be to look in the mirror").

"You are with us, or you are against us": Harvard and other universities need to look hard into their soul and decide on which side they stand.

Daniel Pipes (www.DanielPipes.org), director of the Middle East Forum, received his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard and taught history there.

ARTICLE FROM NEW REPUBLIC

Isaac Goldstein enrolled at San Francisco State University SFSU in part to get away from the anti-Semitism he experienced in the small Northern California town of St. Helena. "I got called a dirty Jew all the time and harassed," says Goldstein, who was one of only three Jews in his high school class of about 120 students. "I thought San Francisco was a liberal, open-minded city and people would accept all kinds of thought."

It hasn't quite turned out that way. As the Middle East crisis has heated up this spring, Jewish students at SFSU and across the bay at the University of California, Berkeley, have spent the better part of their spring semester enduring a barrage of hateful invective. In April a flyer advertising a pro-Palestinian rally at SFSU featured a picture of a dead baby, with the words "CANNED PALESTINIAN CHILDREN MEAT--SLAUGHTERED ACCORDING TO JEWISH RITES UNDER AMERICAN LICENSE"--casually reintroducing the 900-year-old myth that Jews eat gentile children. Then, on Passover, a cinder block was thrown through the glass doors of UC Berkeley's Hillel building. One week later two Orthodox Jews were badly beaten one block from the UC Berkeley campus, and anti-Zionist graffiti appeared on sidewalks and buildings near the school. During a vigil for Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 9, students reciting the Mourner's Kaddish--the Jewish prayer for the dead--were shouted down by protesters who said prayers in memory of suicide bombers.

The rash of incidents culminated on May 7 when approximately 30 Jewish students at SFSU, cleaning up after a peaceful, university-authorized, pro-Israel demonstration, were surrounded by at least twice as many pro-Palestinian students who screamed, "Hitler didn't finish the job," "Fuck the Jews," and "Die, racist pigs." (At least one person was caught on videotape hurling anti-Palestinian epithets back.) University and city police formed a barrier, and the Jewish students were trapped for more than 20 minutes before police funneled them out of the plaza. "I felt very threatened," recalls Yitzhak Santis, director of Middle East Affairs for the Jewish Community Relations Council in San Francisco, who attended the rally and was present when the counterdemonstrators closed in. "I'm convinced that if the police had not been present there would have been violence."

When it comes to the treatment of Jews on campus, in other words, Isaac Goldstein didn't choose well. ProPalestinian activism certainly isn't confined to SFSU and UC Berkeley. But on most campuses the protesters--while often hyperbolic--have been careful to avoid explicit anti-Semitism and threats of violence. When students at Harvard and MIT circulated a petition calling on their universities to divest from companies doing business with Israel, for instance, they were careful to call "the recent attacks on Israeli citizens unacceptable and abhorrent." But in the Bay Area anti-Israel activism has a far more militant and far less liberal flavor. That's not because UC Berkeley and SFSU have unusually large or radical Arab populations; it's because they are home to a deep wellspring of free-floating, hard-left authoritarianism. And unfortunately for Goldstein, today's left-wing authoritarians have set their sights on Israel.

Bay Area campuses have enjoyed a reputation for activism since the 1960s, when Mario Savio started the Free Speech Movement at UC Berkeley and student militants at SFSU successfully pushed for one of the nation's first ethnic-studies programs. But in recent years the protests at both schools have grown increasingly strident. In April 1999 dozens of members of a pro-ethnic-studies organization called the Third World Liberation Front took over a campus building at UC Berkeley, resulting in 103 arrests. When six of the students charged with the most serious crimes--such as assault on a police officer--went on trial a few months later, Third World Liberation Front members took over the courtroom, resulting in 25 more arrests. And it hasn't just been the ethnic-studies movement. Last March pro-affirmative-action demonstrators at UC Berkeley rioted and looted downtown stores. Even Bay Area bicycle activists have gotten into the act, staging "Reclaim the Tarmac" actions--like dumping pieces of furniture in the middle of city roads--to "tak[e] back the streets from automobiles and their corporate sponsors." As UC Berkeley philosophy Professor John Searle--who in the '60s became the first tenured faculty member to back the Free Speech Movement--lamented to The San Francisco Examiner on the movement's thirtieth anniversary, "The saddest thing was that it gave a whole lot of people a model of political life which is totally unrealistic. They wanted to keep sitting in buildings and then finding that policies change."

So it's hardly surprising that pro-Palestinian activism--the latest cause to sweep Bay Area campuses--has also tested the limits of civility. Of the nearly 27,000 students enrolled at SFSU , there are only 50 to 60 Palestinians, estimates Fadi Shamieh, a student organizer of the General Union of Palestinian Students. UC Berkeley, which boasts a student body of 31,000, has fewer than 1,200 students of Arab descent. But Arab students have found eager allies among the Bay Area's preexisting, off-campus lefty groups. The pro-Palestinian organization at UC Berkeley, for instance, receives assistance from Left Turn (a Socialist group), the Revolutionary Communist Party, and the International Socialists Organization (ISO). The pro-Palestinian camp at SFSU also benefits from such outside help. "I don't know their background or their history," SFSU Palestinian activist Shamieh says of his ISO allies, "but all I know is they support us in anything we do." Even Berkeley's city council has plunged into the fray: A sizable minority of its members recently--and unsuccessfully--pushed resolutions to boycott Israel and to call on the district attorney to drop the investigation of the 79 pro-Palestinian activists who took over a UC Berkeley classroom building during midterm exams on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The hard left has given pro-Palestinian groups in the Bay Area an unusual capacity to turn out large crowds. "At every one of our pro-Palestinian rallies we outnumber the other side, sometimes by as much as six or seven to one," says Snehal Shingavi, a UC Berkeley graduate-student instructor who gained notoriety earlier this year for offering a class entitled "The Politics and Poetics of Palestinian Resistance," warning in the course catalogue, "Conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections." (The line was later removed.) "Many people [at the rallies]," Shingavi goes on, "tell me they knew nothing about Israel before the last year." And along with the increased numbers has come increased stridency. "When people are taking to the streets, it tends to attract people from the fringes and makes it a little hard to control," says Jonathan Bernstein, the Anti-Defamation League's San Francisco regional director. "People latch on with their own issues, and I don't think there's been much effort to put parameters around [the movement]." Indeed, California has become something of a magnet for anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic figures from across the country. In recent months supporters of David Duke have distributed flyers railing against "Israeli genocide" on the University of California, San Diego, campus; at Stanford, Lyndon LaRouche adherents have handed out literature condemning Israeli oppression; and Holocaust denier Bradley R. Smith recently ran an op-ed in the UC Berkeley student newspaper condemning the "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians.

Pro-Palestinian student leaders say they reject some of the more outlandish views of their supporters. The head of the Muslim Students' Association at SFSU , in a qualified apology to the university president, placed blame for the April "blood libel" flyer on nonstudents despite the fact that the poster was advertising an event sponsored by his group. "Please understand that the flier was actually designed by a nonstudent community member," the student leader wrote. "We in no way intended nor desired to have this obviously offensive and injurious phrase on our flier." But Jewish students complain that the apology was never sent to any of the Jewish groups on campus. And when SFSU President Robert A. Corrigan condemned what he called "[a] small but terribly destructive number of pro-Palestinian demonstrators, many of whom were not SFSU students," for "abandon[ing] themselves to intimidating behavior and statements too hate-filled to repeat," pro-Palestinian activists from both SFSU and UC Berkeley held a joint press conference to denounce Corrigan for "capitalizing on the atmosphere of fear and fostering intolerance against Arabs and Muslims on campus."

The irony is that if the pro-Palestinian demonstrators weren't so belligerent, they might find common ground with the Jewish students they're attacking. As opposed to Eastern campuses--where many Jewish students take neoconservative, almost Likudnik stances on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict--Jewish students in the Bay Area tend to be on the far left of the American-Jewish political spectrum. Laurie Zoloth, director of the Jewish Studies program at SFSU , explains, "The Jewish students here are absolutely people who stand in the peace camp. These are students who have steadfastly called for a two-state solution and tried desperately to work with the pro-Palestinian groups.... But at San Francisco State to say that I believe in a two-state solution and the right of Israel to exist becomes a right-wing position." Says Goldstein, "It has become politically incorrect among the left to show support for Israel, and that scares me because I really don't want to become a Republican. I really don't." In the Bay Area, he might not have a choice.
