Minister Louis Farrakhan announced he's scaling back his activites because he's lost 35 pounds while fighting pain and infection -- the after-effects of treatment for prostate cancer, as CBS 2's Derrock Blakley reports. In the latest edition of his "Final Call" newspaper, the 73-year-old Farrakhan writes in a letter to his flock,..."i am postponing indefinitely all engagements, meetings and appointments..." "It says Louis Farrakhan is going to take care of his own health," said Depaul University's Dr. Aminah McCloud, who studies the Nation of Islam.
In 1998, Farrakhan was diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated with radiation seeds. Farrakhan says it saved his life, and killed the cancer, but caused painful side effectsm, including infection and inflammation. Doctors call that proctitis. "It is a known side effect and unfortunately those symptoms tend to get worse over time instead of better, If someone develops proctits as a result of radiation treatment," said University of Chicago's Dr. Gregory Zagaja. In his letter, Farrakhan also says he's asking his executive board to assume major authority, writing, "you can prove to the world that the Nation of Islam is more than the charisma, eloquence, and personality of Louis Farrakhan."In other words, says McCloud, Farrakhan is saying: "I'm stepping back from day to day care. Don't bring all those problems to me. Unless it's a major issue, you handle it." There's no publicly known succession plan for Louis Farrakhan as Nation of Islam leader. But McCloud says, Farrakhan has moved the group toward mainstream Muslim theology and forged international links. She says there's no reason to think the Nation will disintegrate, no matter what course Farrakhan's health eventually takes. In a letter dated September 11 to his followers, Farrakhan said doctors discovered an ulcer in his anal area during a visit to Cuba in March. Farrakhan said he will work hard to recover because he does not believe his earthly work is done. He also warned followers to be watchful for any "crooked deceiver" who would create confusion over his condition.

Former President Bill Clinton said that he supports the efforts of African American leaders who are organizing the Million More March, a national gathering of Blacks scheduled to take place in October in Washington, D.C, a decade after the Million Man March was convened. In a rare interview at his Harlem office with the Amsterdam News earlier this week, Clinton said that the gathering—publicly announced last Monday by Minister Louis Farrakhan, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Rev. Jesse L. Jackson—could train a positive spotlight on critical issues impacting African Americans.
“I think this is a very positive idea,” said Clinton, who spoke to the Amsterdam News on his first full day back in his office since his second operation due to complications following his quadruple bypass surgery last September. “I think the country’s focus understandably has strayed a little over the last few years,” Clinton said, adding that while America should focus on homeland security, it must also solve the racial and economic disparity that still exists.
Clinton, who remains extremely popular among African Americans, said that another march, followed by aggressive organizing efforts, could help to curtail some of the challenges in the Black community, which range from high unemployment and alarming prison rates. “Jesse [Jackson] and Mr. [Louis] Farrakhan and Rev. [Al] Sharpton probably have internal domestic political differences, but they’ve agreed on this and I think it’s a good thing,” said Clinton. “I like the idea of a march, but I think it would also be good at the march for them to say, ‘We want to call your attention to this problem and here’s something else you can do. And that it’s fine to be concerned about [homeland] security, but we also have to keep trying to make America strong and better here at home. And we can’t neglect the quality of our jobs, the quality of our education, the quality of our environment.’”The event, scheduled to take place in October, is expected to draw millions of African Americans to the nation’s capital for the three days to participate in a Day of Absence from work and school on Friday, Oct 14, followed by a march on Oct. 15, and religious services the next day.
Clinton said that he supported the Million Man March a decade ago, adding that the gathering was a powerful symbolic expression. “They were basically standing up for the dignity of family and asking African American men and fathers to be more responsible,” Clinton said. “It was totally non-violent and got a big participation and it also showed frankly, a face to a part of America that is not as sympathetic to the problems that African Americans in the cities and the poor rural areas have … that hey, there’s all these people and they are advocating a responsible agenda and not just asking for something, and they’re saying, ‘This is our responsibility; this is what we’re suppose to do.’ I personally thought it was quite positive.”Clinton also defended Bill Cosby’s recent comments, in which the actor called on poorer African Americans to take greater responsibility for their actions. Critics, including Michael Eric Dyson, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who authored the new book “Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind,” said that the comedian unfairly targeted poor Blacks.Clinton, however, said that he understood the spirit of Cosby’s comments.“I think he thought, ‘If I can’t say this, then who can?” said Clinton. “And I think he thought that anybody can come and talk about the consequences of neglect, what should’ve been done and who should’ve done what.“For people like me, I think it’s a little different. I think that what most people in policy-making positions ought to say is that you can’t have a successful society without responsibility and opportunity. But if you take all of the opportunity away, you also remove a lot of the incentive to be responsible. So, what Cosby was saying is ‘Okay, so whether there is enough opportunity or not, if you’re not responsible, you’re not going to have a good life.’ I thought it was a good thing for him to say it, and I think the rest of us should be in the opportunity business, of saying we want to create opportunities for every responsible citizen. If you’re not responsible you squander the opportunity, but if you don’t have the opportunity it breeds much more disconnects in society.”

The son of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan was arrested in a hit-and-run and charged with DWI, Indiana State Police said yesterday.
Nasir Farrakhan, 43, one of nine children of the firebrand minister, was nabbed Saturday night after he allegedly rammed his 1997 Hummer twice into the back of a Honda carrying a 73-year-old man and his wife on the Indiana Toll Road highway.
The couple, who sustained minor injuries, were able to give cops a partial plate number. Police picked up Nasir Farrakhan a short time later.
"He didn't say a heck of a lot. He didn't really know what was happening because of his condition," said Trooper Brad Kaizer, adding that Farrakhan refused to take a Breathalyzer test.

Louis Farrakhan, the controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, has justified Palestinian suicide bomb attacks as a genuine liberation struggle, the Hartford Courant reported. Speaking at a press conference Thursday, Farrakhan said the Palestinians are fighting a war of liberation. Consequently, he argued, when countries such as Iran fund Palestinian suicide attacks, they're supporting the genuine liberation struggle to free their territory from occupation, and not terrorism. The son of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan faces a domestic battery charge after an assault on his wife in their Crete home, police said. The Islam leader's son, Louis E. Farrakhan, 42, left his house Friday before police responded to a 911 call placed by his 13-year-old daughter. Later, Farrakhan called Crete police to tell them he had left the state. 
Farrakhan was told to turn himself in to police by the end of the day Monday, or an arrest warrant would be issued for him on the class A misdemeanor charge, Police Sgt. Andrew Wegmann said Monday. As of late Monday, Farrakhan still had not turned himself in, police said. Police were called to the Farrakhan home on the 3500 block of Ronald Road, in the Lincolnshire East subdivision, at 5:06 p.m. Friday. They found Farrakhan's wife, Lesil, 42, with a gash to the right temple, Wegmann said. Lesil Farrakhan told police her husband hit her with a metal serving tray. She was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights for six stitches to the head. Crete police have been called to the home three times since 1996!!

"If Wayne Williams killed those children, I did too," said civil rights activist Dick Gregory. During the '80s he assisted Atty. Whatley in his investigation by questioning officials involved in what he callsa "cover-up."
